6500 Wireless E709n & Linksys EA6400 Router. Can I connect them with USB?

I have the Officejet 6500 Wireless E709n printer currently connected wirelessly with Linksys EA6400 Router. Windows XP SP2.

I have just replaced my old router with the Linksys EA6400 router and reinstalled the printer software because it simply refused to stay connected wirelessly for any length of time, and eventually refused to connect at all. In order to minimize the number of devices on my wireless network, and avoid the dreaded 'printer offline' message from ever coming back again, I want to connect the printer to the router using a USB cable.

In my first attempt, I plugged in the USB cable and added the printer using Cisco Linsys Smart Wi-Fi. That resulted in 2 instances of the printer (original and copy1) showing on my PC, but neither one would respond to print requests. After that I performed a delete and reinstall of the printer software.

Now that I have the printer successfully working wirelessly again please tell me how I can switch it to using the USB connection to the router?  I assume that other devices will be able to see the printer through the router whether the printer is connected to the router wirelessly or through the USB.

Has anyone done this before? Or is the USB port on the back of the printer only for system install or direct connect to PC?

Thanks.
